Interview with Mark Manes - Creator of ChannelGuide 360
About Us - Information
Monday, 27 March 2006

ChannelGuide 360 News recently interviewed Mark Manes, creator of ChannelGuide 360, about the site.

CG News: What inspired you to create ChannelGuide 360?

Mark: I started ChannelGuide 360 because I wanted to view IPTV programs on my high definition television set. I started watching internet video content using my video iPod.   I would connect my iPod to iTunes on my Mac, then wander back to my home theater set up with the iPod in tow.  I placed my iPod in its dock, which was connected to a video receiver.  This process worked for a while, but I quickly grew tired of sneaker netting my IPTV programs.

CG News: So, how did the Xbox come into play?

Mark: I demoed the Xbox 360 and discovered it had connection technology called Media Center that would allow me to watch television programs via a Windows XP Media Center enabled PCs.

CG News: How does it work?

Mark: Windows Media Center Edition 2005 PCs are equipped with a TV tuner card that allows you to watch and record TV like a TiVo.  I realized that by using a third party software application from Dorada I could watch not only TV shows but vodcasts as well.

CG News:  So it was at that point the channel guide was born?

Mark: Yes.  After I solved the technology issue I realized there was very little content in the format I needed. In order to stream video to the Xbox (at least for now) it needs to be in WMV format, and to capture the video from the internet you need the video to be hosted in a RSS file (also required by the iPod).  I went looking for content, and began contacting sites to encourage them to support this technology.  The website developed as I began cataloging content for my own use.  I realized that other people may want to do what I did with their own systems.

Xbox 360 Networking Tips
Knowledge - Routers
Wednesday, 22 March 2006

Informant.com has put together a great article on how to improve your networking performance between your Xbox 360 and your Windows XP Media Center PC.

"I had a surprisingly easy time connecting my Xbox 360 to my home network, and even adding Media Center Extender functionality proved to be a piece of cake. Still there are a few things to consider before attempting to add an Xbox 360 to your home network.

Get Wired

If you want guaranteed Xbox 360 network performance, wired networking is the way to go. Run a drop in your wall or string cables through the house to get a wired connection from your router to the Xbox 360. Having a 100Mbps wired network connection will ensure great gaming frame rates, fast download speeds from the Xbox Live Marketplace, and reduced likelihood of dropped frames for even the best-looking HD video served from a Media Center..."

DirecTV Blade for Xbox 360?
Xbox News - General
Tuesday, 14 March 2006
Engaget has heard of DirecTV's philandering with Microsoft at CES when they announced they had plans for Windows Media integration and were going to "Extend the DirecTV experience to the Xbox 360 system." Well it looks like they might not just be hooking up a DirecTV box to the 360 and calling it good, but might in fact be adding a whole new blade to the Xbox 360 Dashboard that would allow for HD movie and TV downloads along with "standard-definition streaming DVR (i.e., TiVo) functions." This is according to the Official Xbox Magazine, who marks the story as a rumor.  However, if it the story is true, the Xbox 360 might just be giving the PS3 a run for its money in the media department after all. How to use Channel Guide 360
Knowledge - WMC Xbox 360
Monday, 13 March 2006
The channel guide we maintain here has two different types of listings. The simplest listing is a channel entry that describes the content and provides a link. You can simply click the link that is provided and you will start a download of the related video. Place the file into My Documents / My Videos and watch the video on your Xbox 360 or simply watch the video on your PC. You do not need to have an Xbox 360 to watch any of the videos here.

If you have an Xbox 360 that is properly connected you can place the video into My Documents / My Videos and watch the video you downloaded via Media Center on your Xbox. If you need to set up your Xbox 360 to your Windows XP Media Center PC you can click here for an article to help you get started with the process.

Right now there is a new trend with video on the internet that sprang from the Podcast effort. This effort has become known in the trades as 'videocasting' or IPTV. IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television – or, put simply, video feeds that are made available using the same mechanisms Podcasts use—RSS links.
