Transcode 360 - DivX for your Xbox 360 Print E-mail
Tuesday, 25 April 2006
ImageA video transcoding utility was released late last week that would enable the playback of unsupported video over Xbox 360 and Media Center Extender devices. This software is designed to run on Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

Transcode is completely free for non-commercial use. You can download the software from this site.

Mark Manes, the creator of ChannelGuide 360 when asked about whether ChannelGuide 360 would not incorporate vodcasts and other video sources that are encoded in DivX or XViD responded with the following. “Right now the majority of vodcasts are in either QuickTime or MPEG-4 format. We’re keeping the focus on developing Windows Media Video content so that additional tools are not required to watch the content we catalog in our guide. We are of course excited to see the development efforts continue on tools such as Transcode 360.”

Paramount Studios Supports the Xbox 360 Print E-mail
Thursday, 13 April 2006

Movie trailers in both standard and high definition have been available on the Apple's QuickTime movie trailer site for some time now, but the XBox 360 has caused at least one movie studio to sit up and take notice.  Paramount Studios is offering high definition trailers through the XBox 360.  The studio's move was reported in a recent Los Angeles Times article.

Paramount's move can be seen as a small nod to XBox 360 owners.  However, it also seems to indicate an acknowledgement that the entertainment industry is starting to consider the XBox 360 as something more than just a game console. Paramount's decision will likely cause other studios to follow in their footsteps.

Stay tuned...

DirecTV Blade for Xbox 360? Print E-mail
Tuesday, 14 March 2006
Engaget has heard of DirecTV's philandering with Microsoft at CES when they announced they had plans for Windows Media integration and were going to "Extend the DirecTV experience to the Xbox 360 system." Well it looks like they might not just be hooking up a DirecTV box to the 360 and calling it good, but might in fact be adding a whole new blade to the Xbox 360 Dashboard that would allow for HD movie and TV downloads along with "standard-definition streaming DVR (i.e., TiVo) functions." This is according to the Official Xbox Magazine, who marks the story as a rumor.  However, if it the story is true, the Xbox 360 might just be giving the PS3 a run for its money in the media department after all.
